SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE

How Zigbee Works with 48V Magnetic Track Lighting

Zigbee control and magnetic-track power serve two different functions. The track distributes 48V DC power and provides the mechanical interface for the luminaires. Zigbee commands are handled wirelessly by the selected compatible luminaire and driver configuration, not through the track conductors.

WIRELESS CONTROL PATH

Philips Hue App / Compatible Hue Controls → Philips Hue Bridge → Zigbee 3.0 Wireless Network → Selected Topsund Zigbee 3.0 Luminaires

48V POWER PATH

AC Mains → 48V Power Supply → Magnetic Track → Luminaires

THE MAGNETIC TRACK ITSELF DOES NOT DETERMINE THE CONTROL PROTOCOL

RECOMMENDED ZIGBEE ROUTE

Philips Hue Control for Topsund Zigbee Magnetic Track Lighting

For smaller European residential Zigbee projects, Topsund recommends Philips Hue Bridge as the primary control route. A Hue-based configuration provides a clear architecture for apartments, residential renovations and smaller smart-home projects where wireless lighting control is preferred.

RECOMMENDED CONTROL ROUTE

The control route is defined around Philips Hue Bridge and selected compatible Topsund Zigbee luminaires.

01

Hue App / Compatible Hue Controls

PHILIPS HUE PROJECT ROUTE

01 — Hue Bridge

Philips Hue Bridge acts as the gateway between the Hue control environment and selected compatible Topsund Zigbee 3.0 luminaires.

02 — App & Room Control

Compatible luminaires can be organised according to the required rooms and lighting groups within the selected project configuration.

03 — Dimming & Scenes

Dimming and scene functions can be configured where supported by the selected Zigbee luminaire and driver.

04 — Physical Controls

Compatible physical controls can be included where required, subject to the selected control strategy and project validation.

05 — Project Pairing

The final luminaire, driver, gateway and control combination should be paired and tested before project installation.

TECHNICAL NOTE

Philips Hue compatibility applies only to selected compatible Topsund Zigbee luminaire configurations. It should not be assumed across every magnetic track luminaire or driver version.

LIGHTING CONTROL

What Can Be Controlled?

The available control functions depend on the selected luminaire, Zigbee driver and gateway configuration. Functions should be confirmed against the exact project setup rather than assumed across every Zigbee luminaire.

CORE CONTROL FUNCTIONS

01 — On / Off

Switch individual luminaires or configured lighting groups according to the selected control setup.

02 — Dimming

Adjust light output where the selected Zigbee luminaire and driver support dimming.

03 — Rooms & Groups

Organise compatible luminaires into rooms or control groups according to the project layout.

04 — Scenes

Create different lighting conditions for everyday use, relaxation, dining or other residential scenarios.

05 — App Control

Use the selected Hue-based control environment to manage compatible lighting functions from the smart-home interface.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS & CONDITIONS

06

Physical Wall Control

Physical lighting controls can be incorporated where compatible with the selected Zigbee and Hue control configuration.

07

Tunable White

Tunable White is available only when the selected Zigbee luminaire and driver configuration support it.

CONFIGURATION NOTE

Not every Zigbee luminaire supports every function. Dimming, grouping, scenes, wall control and Tunable White should be confirmed against the exact luminaire, driver and gateway configuration.

COMPATIBILITY PRINCIPLE

Philips Hue Control Compatible Does Not Mean Philips Hue Track Compatible

Control-system compatibility and mechanical track compatibility are two separate requirements. A compatible Zigbee control route does not make two different magnetic track platforms mechanically interchangeable.

CONTROL COMPATIBILITY

Philips Hue Bridge → Selected Topsund Zigbee 3.0 Luminaires

Selected compatible Topsund Zigbee luminaires may be configured for control through Philips Hue Bridge, subject to the selected driver, pairing method and project setup.

TRACK COMPATIBILITY

Philips Hue Track Rail × Topsund Magnetic Track Luminaires

Topsund magnetic track luminaires are not mechanically interchangeable with Philips Hue track rails.

01

Track Profile

Different rail profile and physical dimensions.

02

Adapter Structure

Different luminaire adapter and locking structure.

03

Conductor Arrangement

Different electrical contact and conductor layout.

04

Mechanical Connection

Different mechanical interface between luminaire and rail.

THE PRACTICAL RULE

Use Topsund luminaires with the corresponding Topsund magnetic track system. Philips Hue is used as the control ecosystem for selected compatible Zigbee configurations — not as the mechanical track platform.

PROJECT APPLICATIONS

Where Zigbee Magnetic Track Lighting Fits Best

Zigbee is best suited to smaller, lower-complexity residential projects where wireless control, app-based scenes and straightforward room or group control are the main requirements.

01 / APARTMENTS

Apartments

A practical option for apartment lighting projects requiring smart control without a complex wired control infrastructure.

02 / RENOVATION

Residential Renovations

Suitable where the lighting system is being upgraded and wireless control can reduce the need for additional control wiring.

03 / COMPACT SMART HOME

Compact Smart Homes

A good fit for smaller smart-home projects with a manageable number of rooms, groups and lighting functions.

04 / PHILIPS HUE

Existing Philips Hue Homes

Suitable where Philips Hue is already the preferred smart-lighting control environment and compatible Topsund luminaires are required.

05 / ROOMS & ZONES

Individual Rooms & Zones

Useful for living rooms, kitchens, dining areas, bedrooms or other defined residential zones requiring independent wireless lighting control.

06 / LIGHTING UPGRADE

Residential Lighting Upgrades

Suitable for smaller lighting upgrades where dimming, grouping or scene control is required without introducing a larger building-control architecture.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT CONTROL ROUTE

Use Zigbee where the project scale and control complexity fit.

Zigbee + Philips Hue

Smaller residential smart-home projects

Casambi

Professional wireless lighting control

DALI-2

Professional wired lighting control

KNX + DALI

Larger residential and building-control integration

For large multi-zone residences, complex automation requirements or deeper building-system integration, Zigbee should not automatically be treated as the preferred control route.

PROJECT PLANNING

Confirm the System Before Installation

A Zigbee magnetic track project should be configured around the actual room layout, luminaire schedule and control requirements rather than selecting the control protocol separately from the lighting system.

01

Project Scale & Track Plan

Confirm project size, room and control zones, track layout, installation method, total 48V lighting load and power-supply arrangement. This also helps determine whether Zigbee suits the project scale and control complexity.

02

Luminaire Configuration

Confirm luminaire models, quantities, light distribution, the Zigbee-compatible luminaire and driver version, dimming requirements and Tunable White where applicable. Do not assume every magnetic track luminaire uses the same Zigbee configuration.

03

Philips Hue Control Strategy

Define the Philips Hue Bridge requirement, room structure, lighting groups, scenes, dimming logic, physical wall controls and Tunable White control where applicable. The control strategy should be defined before the final product configuration.

04

Sample Validation

Test the actual selected configuration for pairing, on/off control, dimming, rooms and groups, scenes, physical wall controls and Tunable White where applicable. Validate the exact luminaire, driver and Hue combination before installation.

PROJECT RECOMMENDATION

Validate the Exact Configuration with Samples

For project orders, Topsund recommends validating the selected Zigbee luminaire, driver and Philips Hue control combination with representative samples before final installation.
