Casambi Control for 48V Magnetic Track Lighting

Wireless Casambi control over Topsund’s M20 four-wire DALI-2 lighting platform. Topsund’s current Casambi solution uses DALI-2 luminaires connected through a compatible Casambi-to-DALI controller. Casambi provides the wireless user-control layer, while DALI-2 remains the professional lighting-control layer inside the M20 system. Suitable for architectural lighting projects requiring dimming, Tunable White, scenes, wall control and flexible wireless operation.

SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE

How Topsund’s Casambi + DALI-2 Architecture Works

Topsund does not use a Casambi driver inside every magnetic track luminaire. Instead, Casambi is connected to the DALI-2 lighting layer through a compatible Casambi-to-DALI controller.

DALI-2 Luminaires

THREE DISTINCT ROLES

Casambi — Wireless control, user interface and scene operation.

DALI-2 — Professional control of the selected magnetic track luminaires.

M20 Four-Wire Track — Carries both 48V DC power and the DALI bus to the luminaires.

DOES EVERY LUMINAIRE NEED A CASAMBI DRIVER?

No.

In Topsund’s current Casambi architecture, the luminaires remain DALI-2 luminaires. The Casambi-to-DALI controller connects the Casambi wireless network to the DALI lighting layer, so an individual Casambi driver is not required inside every luminaire.

POWER & DALI BUS ARCHITECTURE

48V Power and DALI Control Are Separate Paths

The M20 four-wire track carries both lighting power and DALI control, but these remain electrically separate functions.

TWO SEPARATE ELECTRICAL PATHS

48V POWER PATH

AC Mains → SD-10048 → 48V DC → M20 Power Conductors → Luminaires

Two conductors inside the M20 track carry 48V DC power. The SD-10048 provides the low-voltage power required by the magnetic track lighting system.

DALI CONTROL PATH

Casambi Wireless Network → Casambi-to-DALI Controller → DALI Bus → M20 DALI Conductors → DALI-2 Luminaire Drivers

The other two conductors inside the M20 track carry the DALI bus.

M20 FOUR-WIRE TRACK

2 conductors = 48V DC power   •   2 conductors = DALI bus

POWER & BUS FACTS

01 — SD-10048

Provides the 48V DC power required by the M20 magnetic track lighting system.

02 — DALI Signal Connection

The DALI signal connection associated with the SD-10048 provides the DALI bus connection / pass-through to the DALI conductors inside the M20 track.

03 — DALI Bus Power

The SD-10048 does not generate DALI bus power. DALI bus power must be provided by the selected control architecture.

04 — Separate Electrical Functions

48V power and DALI control share the four-wire M20 platform, but they remain electrically separate functions.

SYSTEM PLANNING PRINCIPLE

The 48V power architecture and the DALI bus-power architecture must be confirmed together before the control system is selected.

CASAMBI CONTROL & DALI-2

DALI-2 Lighting with Casambi Wireless Control

The luminaire side of Topsund’s current M20 Casambi solution remains DALI-2. The selected luminaire and driver configuration must be specified according to the project.

CONTROL OVERVIEW

01 — DALI-2 Lighting Layer Luminaire Layer

The selected M20 luminaires remain DALI-2 on the lighting side.

02 — DALI-2 DT6

For fixed-white luminaires requiring professional dimming and control.

03 — DALI-2 DT8 Tc

For Tunable White luminaires requiring brightness and colour-temperature control.

04 — Casambi App

Provides the wireless user-control interface when supported by the selected control devices.

05 — Casambi Wall Control

Compatible physical wall controls can be incorporated into the Casambi network.

CONTROL CAPABILITIES

01 — DALI-2 Lighting Layer

The luminaire side remains DALI-2. Casambi operates at the wireless system-control layer through a compatible Casambi-to-DALI controller.

02 — DALI-2 DT6

DT6 is used for fixed-white luminaires requiring professional dimming and control.

03 — DALI-2 DT8 Tunable White

DT8 Tc is used when both brightness and colour temperature need to be controlled. Topsund Tunable White magnetic track luminaires are available from 2700K–6000K. The selected Casambi-to-DALI controller must support DALI DT8 Tc.

04 — Casambi App & Wall Control

Compatible Casambi controls can provide wireless operation through the Casambi App and physical wall controls. Exact available functions depend on the selected controller and DALI architecture.

A — Casambi App

Typical functions may include dimming, Tunable White adjustment, Casambi scenes and lighting-area control.

B — Wall Control

Compatible Casambi wall controls can provide frequently used lighting functions without relying only on a mobile device.

05 — Individual Control & DALI Groups

Individual luminaire control should not be assumed for every Casambi-to-DALI controller. Some converter architectures operate in broadcast mode. If the project requires individual DALI addressing or defined DALI groups, the controller must be selected specifically for that control strategy.

CONTROL PRINCIPLE

The selected luminaire, DALI device type and Casambi-to-DALI controller must be specified together. Control functions should never be assumed from the M20 track alone.

CONTROLLER SELECTION & COMMISSIONING

Selecting the Casambi-to-DALI Control Layer

The Casambi-to-DALI controller is the interface between the Casambi wireless network and the DALI-2 lighting system. It should be selected according to the project requirements rather than by protocol name alone.

01

Project Review

Select the controller for the required DALI configuration: DT6 fixed-white or DT8 Tc Tunable White.

02

System Configuration

Confirm whether the project requires broadcast control, defined DALI groups or individual DALI addressing.

03

DALI Bus Power

Some controllers include an integrated DALI bus power supply, while other architectures require a separate DALI bus power supply.

04

Technical Confirmation

There is no universal Casambi-to-DALI controller limit. Capacity depends on the selected controller, available DALI bus power, number of connected DALI control gears, required control strategy and project topology.

CASAMBI USER CONTROLS

Define the User Interface Before Controller Selection

App control, wall switches and required user functions should be defined before controller selection. The selected control layer must match the required dimming, Tunable White, scene and user-interface behaviour.

ON-SITE COMMISSIONING

Commission the Selected Control Strategy

Depending on the selected architecture, commissioning may include Casambi network configuration, controller setup, configuration for the selected DT6 or DT8 lighting system, DALI addressing or grouping where required and supported, Casambi scenes, wall-control functions, Tunable White behaviour and final system testing.

PROJECT APPLICATIONS

Where Casambi + DALI-2 Works Best

Casambi + DALI-2 is particularly useful when a project requires professional DALI lighting together with a flexible wireless user-control layer.

01 / RETROFIT

Retrofit and Renovation Projects

Suitable where additional building-side control wiring is difficult or undesirable. Casambi provides the wireless user-control layer while the DALI lighting bus remains integrated into the M20 track.
