Can Magnetic Track Lighting Be Installed Without a False Ceiling?
Yes. A false ceiling is not required when the magnetic track system is designed for surface-mounted or suspended installation. For finished ceilings, concrete ceilings and renovation projects, the M20A magnetic track can be installed directly onto the ceiling surface without recessed ceiling construction.
THE SHORT ANSWER
A Finished Ceiling Does Not Prevent Magnetic Track Installation
The installation method matters more than whether a false ceiling is available.
With a surface-mounted track, the magnetic track is mechanically fixed directly to the finished ceiling rather than recessed into plasterboard.
This makes surface installation particularly suitable when the ceiling is already complete or when lowering or rebuilding the ceiling is not practical.
Suitable for Existing Ceilings
Finished ceilings · Concrete ceilings · Renovation projects. Surface-mounted M20A avoids the need for a continuous recessed ceiling opening.
INSTALLATION OPTIONS
Which M20 Track Profile Fits Your Ceiling?
Choose the track profile around the ceiling condition first.
M20A is the primary choice for surface-mounted or suspended installation without a false ceiling. M20B, M20C and M20D are recessed profiles and require the ceiling construction to be prepared for the selected installation detail.

M20A
Surface / Suspended
For finished ceilings, concrete ceilings and renovation projects. M20A can be mounted directly to the ceiling surface or suspended below the structural ceiling.
FALSE CEILING: NOT REQUIRED

M20B
Trimless Recessed
For plaster ceilings where a clean trimless appearance is planned as part of the ceiling construction.
CEILING PREPARATION: REQUIRED

M20C
Trimless 12 mm Clip-In
For pre-planned trimless ceiling integration using the M20C 12 mm clip-in installation structure.
CEILING PREPARATION: REQUIRED

M20D
Recessed with Frame
For standard recessed installation where a visible frame edge is acceptable and a suitable ceiling opening can be prepared.
RECESSED OPENING: REQUIRED
CEILING CONDITION FIRST
No false ceiling: start with M20A. Recessed or trimless installation: confirm the ceiling build-up and required opening before selecting M20B, M20C or M20D.
POWER SUPPLY PLANNING
The Power Supply Can Be Installed Inside the Track
Without a false ceiling, power supply placement should be planned as part of the M20A track layout.

For the M20A surface-mounted system, the SD-10048 power supply is installed directly inside the magnetic track. This keeps the power supply within the track system instead of requiring a separate false-ceiling cavity.
The AC supply route and SD-10048 position should therefore be coordinated with the final track layout before installation.
01
In-Track Power Supply
SD-10048 is installed directly inside the M20A track, keeping the power supply integrated with the lighting system.
02
Plan the AC Feed Position
Coordinate the mains cable entry and power-supply location with the final track arrangement before installation.
03
48V Power Path
AC mains → SD-10048 → 48V DC → M20A track → magnetic track luminaires.
PLAN POWER WITH THE TRACK
For projects without a false ceiling, confirm the track layout, AC feed position and SD-10048 location together before installation.
